ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has also affected the camera industry, and various events have been cancelled. In addition, the recent improvement in the performance of cameras installed in smartphones has reduced the demand for replacement cameras, as it is easy to take pictures without carrying a camera. For customers, online word-of-mouth is what they refer to when purchasing a product. This data is important not only for customers, but also for companies. In this research, we will use online word-of-mouth data and focus not only on numerical data but also on textual data and use text mining to learn knowledge about the decision to replace a camera.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic emerged in December 2019. Renal transplant recipients receiving chronic immunosuppression are considered to be at a high risk of infection. Aside from upper respiratory tract symptoms, coronavirus disease 2019 has also been reported to cause acute kidney injury in 20-50% of infected cases. Case presentation: A 62-year-old male renal transplant recipient presented with high fever, diarrhea, and cough, concurrent with rapid deterioration of graft function. The patient tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019. The pathological findings of the graft biopsy revealed diffuse flattening of tubular epithelial cells and extensive loss of the brush border in proximal tubular cells. Mycophenolate mofetil was discontinued and sotrovimab, remdesivir, intravenous immunoglobulin, and intravenous methylprednisolone were administered, resulting in gradual improvements in clinical symptoms and renal function. Conclusion: We describe a case of a coronavirus disease 2019-infected kidney transplant recipient who developed severe acute kidney injury caused by severe acute tubular necrosis.

ABSTRACT

Increased physical activity is an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis that causes knee pain. However, due to the coronavirus disease 2019, noncontact and non-face-to-face interventions have increased, but the quality of evidence supporting their effectiveness remains unclear. The purpose of the study was to assess the quality of evidence of the effects of non-face-to-face and noncontact interventions on knee pain and physical activity in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of different intervention methods (education and exercise). The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database were systematically searched. Four randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis demonstrated that the educational intervention group was significantly effective, although supportive evidence was low quality. Educational intervention may be effective, but the effects need to be confirmed by higher quality clinical trials.

ABSTRACT

When using the extracorporeal capillary membrane oxygenator (sample A) for ECMO treatments of COVID-19 severely ill patients, which is dominantly used in Japan and worldwide, there is a concern about the risk of SARS-CoV-2 scattering from the gas outlet port of the membrane oxygenator. Terumo has launched two types of membranes (sample A and sample B), both of which are produced by the microphase separation processes using polymethylpentene (PMP) and polypropylene (PP), respectively. However, the pore structures of these membranes and the SARS-CoV-2 permeability through the membrane wall have not been clarified. In this study, we analyzed the pore structures of these gas exchange membranes using our previous approach and verified the SARS-CoV-2 permeation through the membrane wall. Both have the unique gradient and anisotropic pore structure which gradually become denser from the inside to the outside of the membrane wall, and the inner and outer surfaces of the membrane have completely different pore structures. The pore structure of sample A is also completely different from the other membrane made by the melt-extruded stretch process. From this, the pore structure of the ECMO membrane is controlled by designing various membrane-forming processes using the appropriate materials. In sample A, water vapor permeates through the coating layer on the outer surface, but no pores that allow SARS-CoV-2 to penetrate are observed. Therefore, it is unlikely that SARS-CoV-2 permeates through the membrane wall and scatter from sample A, raising the possibility of secondary ECMO infection. These results provide new insights into the evolution of a next-generation ECMO membrane.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may result in a greater decrease in visual acuity (VA) among Japanese children. Our study aimed to examine Japanese children's VA during the pandemic. VA data were collected using standard eye tests during school health check-ups conducted in 2019 and 2020 on 5893 children, in seven public elementary schools and four public junior high schools in Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka. VA changes were statistically analyzed. The relationship between the survey year and poor VA yielded a significant regression coefficient for the surveyed years in elementary and junior high school students. The 2019 VA value and VA change from 2019 to 2020 demonstrated a significant regression coefficient in elementary school students with VAs of "B (0.7-0.9)" and "C (0.3-0.6)", and junior high school students with VAs of "B", "C", and "D (<0.3)". An analysis of the relationship between the survey year and eye laterality of VA yielded a significant regression coefficient in the surveyed years for elementary (OR, 1.516; 95% CI, 1.265-1.818) and junior high school students (OR, 1.423; 95% CI, 1.136-1.782). Lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic might have affected VA and eye laterality in Japanese children.

ABSTRACT

Under the pandemic situation, there is an urgent need to produce and acquire sufficient quantities of prophylactic vaccines. It becomes important to devise a way to achieve reliable immunity with lower doses to distribute limited supplies of vaccines to maximum number of people very quickly. Intradermal (ID) vaccination is one such method to increase the effectiveness of vaccines. However, this method has not been widely used in general clinical practice because it is technically difficult to inject vaccines precisely into the ID tissue. Therefore, new ID delivery systems that allow reliable ID administration are under development. In this paper, we summarize its design and present the results of performance and usability testing for the Immucise™ Intradermal Injection System (Immucise™). This study showed that Immucise™ can reduce dead volume and inject drugs precisely into the ID tissues of subjects from infants to the elderly and can be used correctly and safely by healthcare professionals. This randomized controlled trial compared ID administration with Immucise™ and standard subcutaneous (SC) administration of seasonal influenza vaccine by analyzing the efficacy of the vaccine in the elderly group at 90 days and 180 days after administration. It was found that the vaccine for the ID group was as effective or more effective than that for the SC group up to 180 days later. It was also found that the geometric mean titer values, especially for B strains, were higher in the two-dose ID group than in the two-dose SC group. These findings suggest that Immucise™ is one of the best devices to distribute a small amount of vaccine quickly and widely to a larger number of people with little loss of vaccine during a pandemic.

ABSTRACT

A 62-year-old woman with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) developed coma on day 19 after her pneumonia was ameliorated. Brain magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium showed radial linear perivascular enhancement, typically seen in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy, although anti-GFAP antibody results were negative. Her consciousness recovered with high-dose steroid administration. We diagnosed the patient with COVID-19-associated acute disseminated encephalomyelopathy (ADEM) with radial linear perivascular emphasis.

Introduction: The data of immunosuppressive therapy management on solid organ transplant recipients with coronavirus disease 2019 are insufficient. We report a kidney transplant recipient who developed coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia, with successful management of low-dose mPSL. Case presentation: A 36-year-old man, who underwent living kidney transplantation 1.5 year prior, developed fever. After 10 days, he developed dyspnea, and his blood oxygen levels decreased. Computed tomography showed pulmonary ground-glass shadow on both lungs, and the coronavirus disease 2019 real-time polymerase chain reaction test was positive. After reducing the immunosuppressive agents, the C-reactive protein levels continued elevating, and the pulmonary shadow spread. Subsequently, low-dose methylprednisolone (40 mg/day) was administered for 4 days and his C-reactive protein and blood oxygen levels increased and improved, respectively. The coronavirus disease 2019 real-time polymerase chain reaction test was negative and the pulmonary shadow disappeared. Conclusion: Low-dose methylprednisolone may prevent the development of severe coronavirus disease 2019.
